Darren’s Priorities
Putting Students First
As your trustee, I will advocate for strong public education, safe and inclusive schools, collaborative leadership, and the supports students and staff need to succeed.
Strong student-centred funding
Resources should be directed towards the needs of students in our classrooms.
- I will work with other SD61 trustees, and through the BC School Trustees Association, other trustees from across the province, to directly advocate to the province for increased funding for schools.
- More English Language Learning (ELL) teachers and resources for multilingual students.
- Better staff-to-student ratios to ensure students have access to the supports they need, like education assistants and learning support teachers.
- Access to learning support facilities and resources for students with and without Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
Safe and inclusive schools
Every student should feel valued, respected, and supported at school.
- Dedicated time and resources for social-emotional learning from the kindergarten level.
- Support for the SOGI 123 curriculum guide, and adequate professional development and training for staff and administration.
- Behaviour support programs and progressive, restorative discipline for violence in schools.
- Working with 2SLGBTQIA+ students to ensure fair access to spaces and clubs.
Collaborative leadership
Decision-making at the Board level should be collaborative, transparent, and accountable.
- Strengthening the role of District joint committees.
- Improved transparency at the School Board level, with better public access to decision-making.
Supporting education workers
I will support teachers, educational assistants, and all support staff, recognizing the interwoven role they play in our students’ education journey.
Sound, responsible decision-making
I will approach decisions thoughtfully and responsibly, keeping the educational experience positive and productive for student success.
Strong schools put students first.
